High Pressure Sand and Solids Removal Systems
"The Sand Knock-Out"

Schooner Petroleum Services offers a variety of specialized sand knockout systems that can handle working pressures of 5,000, 10,000, 15,000 & 20,000 PSI.  These patented high-pressure particle traps utilize 7^1/16", 11", or 13^5/8" center spools with 2^1/16" or 3^1/16" inlet & outlet bores.  While maintaining the full pressure of a high pressure well, these devices remove sand & rock from the flow stream before it reaches manifolds and sensitive well-testing equipment.

To briefly explain, the flow-back quickly feeds into the top of the sand knockout through a smaller line and dumps solids, liquids, and gas into the main spool.  As the materials enter the larger chamber, the velocity is slowed due to the drop in pressure and the flow is directed over a series of baffles that create a cyclonic effect.  With the aid of gravity, the solids drop to the bottom of the system where it will collect in a reservoir until disposed of.  The flow is then channeled to the top of the sand knockout where its exits through the outlet spool.

The timing of dump disposals will depend upon the mass of solids that flow back from the well after fracture.  To best regulate this disposal, Schooner recommends using a dump schematic that includes a manual valve, hydraulic valve and a hydraulic choke.
