Health, Safety, & Environment (HSE)

HSE Program Goals & Commitment
The health, safety, and environmental concerns of our business have been and will continue to be the first consideration in every operation and at every level of our company.  The prevention of occupationally induced injuries and illnesses is of such consequence that it will be given precedence over operating productivity whenever necessary.  In order to protect our employees from suffering any hardship caused by injuries, it is Schooner Petroleum Services' policy to promote safe practices and maintain a safe working environment through an effective accident prevention program.  With this mindset, Schooner Petroleum Services is committed to:
  • Achieving the goal of "Target Zero" (zero accidents & incidents in and out of the work place)
  • Managing HSE matters as any other critical business activity
  • Stopping any work, or preventing work from commencing, when HSE risks have not been controlled or properly identified
  • Protecting & maintaining the environment by using material and energy efficiently when providing our products and services
  • Promoting a culture in which all our employees share this commitment while on the job and off in other ventures
  • Requiring its associates and partners to manage HSE in line with this policy
  • Setting goals for improvement and regularly measure, appraise and report our HSE program's performance

Safety Meetings
Because an effective safety program is an integral part of Schooner Petroleum Services' operations, safety meetings are held on a regular basis: pre-job, post-job, weekly, and as needed.  Monthly safety meetings are scheduled throughout the year and are mandatory for all management, supervisors, and employees.  They are facilitated by our HSE representatives.  All information is documented and recorded on a routine basis.

Accident / Incident Response
In addition to the continued effort of promoting safe practices, Schooner Petroleum Services has a written policy that describes the roles and responsibilities that will be initiated in the unlikely event of an accident.  Written accident/incident reports are required for spills, injuries, property damage, near-misses, fire, explosions, etc.  All accident/incident reports are reviewed by managers and supervisors.  Furthermore, Schooner has a policy to investigate, document, and discuss near-miss accidents.  Finally, an effective process is in place to share with the entire workforce the lessons learned from accidents and near-misses.

Substance Abuse Program
Schooner's Substance Abuse Program addresses the drug screening & testing of employees and complies with the DCC (Contractors Consortium).  Drug tests are conducted at pre-employment, periodic, post-accident, probable cause, and at random.

Safety Reward Program
To track the continual progress of safety awareness, Schooner Petroleum Services developed a program that rewards employees that do not have a lost-time accident while on the job.  With rewards set at 3 month intervals, employees quickly see that doing things fast will never be as rewarding as doing things safe.

"We will maintain a safety and health program conforming to the best management practices of organizations of this type. To be successful, such a program must embody the proper attitudes toward injury and illness prevention not only on the part of supervisors and employees, but also between each employee and his or her coworkers. Only through such a cooperative effort can a safety program be established and preserved in the best interest of all."
